A Note From Doug

Hello Doug,

Photo of my father

I hope you have dried out from all of the rain we have had this week! Hopefully this weekend will be nice and we can get back outside and create wonderful images for our clients.

This is an image of my father that I took earlier this year. He was one of the few World War II and Korean War survivors left in the the United States. My dad passed away last week and was buried on Monday with full military honors. He was 91 years old. Although we are saddened that he is not with us anymore, he really had a wonderful life. He was married to my mother for 70 years, had 6 children, 18 grand children, 22 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. More importantly, he lived life on his terms which was quite amazing in this day and age considering that he fully retired in 1987 and never worked another day for the rest of his life. Think about that - not working for 27 years and always having enough money to do what you want each and every day. Pretty cool huh?

Today's article is part 2 of the three part series on selling yourself. Read these tips carefully and see how you can incorporate them into your photography business. Who knows...if you do this right you too may be able to live the life of your design!

Remember,  I am here as a resource for you and your business. Please send me an email or schedule a call with me if you would like to go deeper into thinking about how to improve your bottom line in your photography business. The first call is FREE and it could change the way you THINK!

Talk with you soon!

In Order To Sell Your Photography,

You Need to Sell Yourself! Part 2 of 3

As we continue this series on the finer points of selling yourself, let’s review the first four points from last weeks article. If you missed the first article, you can find it on my website www.o2ecoaching.com

  1. Dress professionally!
  2. Learn the proper way to greet people and communicate with them!
  3. Don’t ask the question “How are you!”
  4. Use a “Terrific” Reply in front of a prospect or client.
  5. Pay close attention to peoples’ names. People love to hear their name. For this reason, it is very important that you get their names when you meet them. Make a conscious effort. When they tell you who they are, turn right around and say their name back to them.  For example, “Hi I am John Smith.” You would say, “Nice to meet you John.” If you miss their name say, “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.” They will then repeat it. You cannot pay too much attention to their name. As an extra bonus, take time to memorize everyone’s name in the family before doing a family portrait or wedding. People will be very impressed when you start calling the children or family members by name.
  6. Keep a positive outlook! Research has shown that those who have a positive outlook on life tend to make more money than those who don’t. Having a positive attitude even when times are tough sends positive energy out to the Universe. Things don’t always get better just because you have a positive outlook, but the positive outlook helps a lot in a couple of ways: Having a positive attitude conditions your mind to see the opportunities that come into your life. A positive outlook shows others that you are a winner and they will follow you because you are fun to be around. No one wants to be associated with a loser, but everyone loves a winner!
  7. Be Enthusiastic! Enthusiasm is contagious. Think about the last time you were around someone who was really enthusiastic about something. Their energy level was high and their desire and drive to accomplish things were real. If you are enthusiastic, your life will seem so much better!  Work on this – especially when you are around your clients or in the sales room. You will be surprised at how the energy will shift and people will love working with you because you are positive and show that you love what you do! Zig Zigler stated: “The last four letters in the word enthusiasm is I A S M – which stands for “I am sold myself!” When you are enthusiastic, people who meet you and work with you are “sold” on you because they see how you are “sold yourself” on you and what you are doing.
  8. Don’t say anything that has a double meaning.  Selling yourself means demonstrating to others that you are dependable, capable, honest and straightforward. You do this by the careful selection of words you say. Be sure everything you say is understood by the people who hear you, so they know exactly where you are coming from

Next week I will finish this series by adding four more tips that will help you sell yourself more successfully.

Productivity Tip of the Week:

As we plan our week, it is important to plan what author/speaker Stephen Covey calls the Big Rocks first. These are the tasks or things you want to make sure you accomplish in the week. For example, plan out next month's marketing campaign or analyze April's Profit and Loss statement. Maybe you want to schedule time to watch you child's soccer game or school play. You would schedule these events in your calendar as Big Rocks. Once you have the Big Rocks scheduled, then you would plan the less important things around those rocks.

It is not necessarily the best thing to "always be busy". What is necessary is spending the time working on the most important things - hence the Big Rocks.
