A Note From Doug

Hello Doug,

I was saddened to hear Tony Christiana, Photographer, 75, of Catlett, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Many of you knew Tony and know that he was an icon in the VPPA, PPA and SEPPA. Tony dedicated his life to photography and helping other photographers succeed in their quest in perfecting their craft. He was truly a Great Master Photographer and I appreciate the conversations and guidance that he has given me over the years. You will be missed.

To Be Truly Focused On Your Business,

You Need A Vision Statement!

Vision Graphic

In the June edition of Professional Photographer magazine, there is an interesting article by Angela Pointon on creating a vision statement for your studio. How many of you actually have an updated vision statement?

To grow a thriving, prosperous photography business, it is important to have a vision of what you want
 your business to look like.
You can't get to where you want to go
without a clear vision of what you want.

We have all heard this time and time again, but so few of us take the time to
set a clear direction for our business. And this is one of the most critical components
to accomplishing anything that is important in our life.

What is a vision? Creating a vision is the process of developing
a picture in your mind of what you want
for your life in the future,
translating it into the written word,
 picturing it in your mind,
 and developing it even further
into specific action steps.
You can have visions for all aspects of your life -
business, health, finances, relationship, career and more.
Visioning uses both mental and physical tools
 of your mind and body,
such as the thoughts and actions
to create and realize your goals.

It's been widely acknowledged by experts
that there is power in defining, declaring, and then committing to what you want
your life to look like.
Your vision is the articulation of your desired future.

A clear vision will help to set a desired course for you. Without this direction to guide us, we often fail to acquire the quality of life
 we want and expect.

YOUR ACTION THIS WEEK:

Write down what you really want
your photography business and life to look like.
Think about the best vision you can imagine.
Don't worry about how you're going to make it happen. Instead focus on what you REALLY desire,
and be as specific as possible! What would your business look like if you knew that it couldn’t fail?

Here are some questions to answer when
creating your vision. And add anything else that is important to you. How many clients do you want to serve? Who are you currently working with? What is your area of specialty? What products and services do you offer? What does your daily and weekly schedule look like? How much money are you making? What separates your business from the other photographers in the market?

How vividly can you create your vision of your ideal business? How clear can you get? Take time this week to create your vision for your business. I would love to see what you come up with. Send me an email and I will help you edit your vision statement for FREE!

Photography Tip of the Week:

How strong should the hair light be in a studio portrait?

Think of the hair light the same as you would when adding garlic into spaghetti sauce. Garlic is a great seasoning for adding "flavor" to the sauce as long as it is used in moderation! IF you add too much than that's all you taste. In lighting, if the hair light is too strong, then that's all you see! You want to make sure that you are not blowing out the highlights, especially on someone who has blonde hair.

Technically speaking, the hair light should be the same f-stop as the fill light. The goal is to separate the hair from the background, without overpowering the photograph. Someone who has dark brown or black hair will require more power than someone who has lighter colored hair. In most cases remember, "less is best".

Test and see. Unlike garlic that is already stirred into the spaghetti sauce, you can lessen the power if you have too much light on your subject and still have a decent photograph. Bon a petit!
